About These OTHER PORTFOLIOS
This area of my website focuses on select portfolios of my photography beyond my main projects, (which have separate more extensive coverage). Each portfolio in this area has a set of images and (below on this page) an artist statement and other background. Initially, there is just one such selected portfolio, but there will be more!
Celebrating Wilderness Africa
In the wilderness areas of Africa, I celebrate the fragile beauty where shadows dance with light. I also offer a salute and call to action for resilience and hope amidst adversity.
Much of that wilderness and its inhabitants faces severe pressures from climate change and development. Development can lead to habitat loss for wildlife, conflict at human-to-wildlife interfaces. Development can also impact indigenous communities and their ways of life, possibly disrupting hundreds of years of sustainable co-existence between humans and their local ecosystems.
But wilderness Africa can also play a crucial role for the entire world in mitigating the climate crisis. Vast rainforests like the Congo Basin are massive carbon sinks, among the largest and most important globally. African grasslands and savannahs, as well as mangroves and other coastal ecosystems, also store significant amounts of carbon in their soils.
Those mitigations are just some of the benefits that wilderness Africa offers the world, but only as long as it is embraced, supported and preserved. Sustained and sustainable visitor travel in these areas can be a crucial contribution to their support and preservation.
I hope these images remind you of the treasures in wilderness Africa, as well as the jeopardy. I trust that they also underline the urgent mission for each of us to reduce our climate impact. I further hope that they encourage you to visit – and thereby help to preserve – these places of African wilderness magical light.
